link aggregation in linux (combining ethernet ports)
we have two internet connections, sad story about how i still live wtih my parents, since i at the time of my disability i had a 740 credit score and about 200k in credit, which my parents would pay for, until one magical day after i helped comedy central make a few movies, but whatever
we have two internet connections in our house, so i decided to combine them after a quick google search, found out my distro of choice, fedora, supports both technologies of link aggregation, bonding and teaming
i originally heard of combining internet connections on the dial up days of aol, and it was called something else. i think it was a windows program that combined dial up connections, but yeah, was a long time ago and cost like 30$ i didnt hvae at the time
but yeah, i saw link aggregation on google when i was searching for a link aggregator, and found out macos had it, and yeah, on macos, it features a link aggregation feature for multiple ethernet ports, but requires a specific switch for a technology called lacp, link aggregation control protocol i think, but yeah, you can find the product page for a switch that supports it that costs about 50$, here you go https://amzn.to/4lzNuEu which is titled a "YuLinca 6 Port 2.5G Managed Switch with 2x10G SFP+ Slot, 4 x 2.5Gigabit Ethernet Ports , Support LACP/QOS/VLAN/IGMP, Mini Size Metal Easy Web Managed Fanless Network Switch"
that switch including most newer, mid to high range routers support a web interface to the switch hardware, which means you can configure and access most new features, including industry standard protocols such as lacp and qos, directly from a web browser, a leap above being just able to press a single button on a switch. a switch
but without the switch, even when using fedoras bonding, teaming, or macos link aggregation feature, you cant really have an aggregate network. meaning you cant use any switch and possbly almost any modem (most modems i think need to be supported by some lacp standard im guessing but ill find out tomorrow), and expect your wan connections to be able to function as a single connection
on the fedora side, it was easy as using the cockpit package which is the web administration program for fedora, i was able to combine my ethernet ports. the thing is, the only option that completely worked was the 'broadcast' feature of link aggregation, and it was extremely error prone. this was done without using a switch, but come to think of it, since this house has an updated switch (we have cat5 wires run throughout the house internally, meaning we can just plug in a cat5 and it connects to a switch upstairs). but yeah, not sure if link aggregation requires a purely lacp supported environment, but im guessing a no since aggregation features can be utilized at a certain osi layer
well realizing that in and all, completely, i guess i need to buy another switch since the whole house is wired up to that router, but hopefully when my switch comes in in the morning i can experiment
the jist is to use link aggregation, on any operating system, including freebsd, you need a network switch that supports lacp, at minimum at my descretion
