smart home review pt1

sorry if im out of it, but i have aids or something, wonderful day so far i guess

but yeah, smart homes. we think it means like, a roast cooking automatically, i guess it can do that, maybe it can but yeah, it just means stuff like controlling devices through your smart phone or if youre lucky, your linux (not bsd, i think you have the option) atleast, but yeah you can use windows to manage your smart devices

apple has homekit, and google has google home, theres also a ton of other manufacturers that let you hook up cameras, temprature sensors, lights (i have blue lights in my room that can be changed to almost any rgb value), electrical outlets, and even cameras. thats about it, you'll most likely be using a third party manufacturer for smart home stuff, but

most can be linked to apple/google homekit/home, but the open source standard is matter, i think, and thats the baseline standard all these smart home people are using. so you'll need a hub, which can be from 20$ to 300$, and devices, and theyre all utilized through an app on google/apple devices, so you can do stuff like trigger events like if a person walks in turn this on, or theres security features to text you when a camera detects a person, or you can automate changing smart lights from red to blue at 7pm, or you can setup a camera to watch out a window, and watch that video on your linux camera

the camera i bought is pointed out my window so i can look outside from a little vlc window on my linux desktop, which is cool since yeah, long story about my neighbors, and comedy central, and cnn, but whatever

i also have sensors everywhere lol, great to have them

heres a link to aqara's product page with all their products, on amazon

the basics of setting up smart home devices are: read all included instructions and follow them exactly. there are qr codes i think theyre called, all you need to do is point the qr code, which look like squares with a pattern on them, in your camera app or when prompted by the aqara app

aqara supports homekit so you can access this data directly from macos using the home app made by apple, and yeah i think therse google home features so you can use an app as well, but i havent been able to set it up but ill try next month or sometime after that when i have money, maybe, maybe not
